Licensed Trainers for Olympiad Training Support

Image
There was a total of 85 Federations, new and in developmental categories 4 and 5 that were eligible for Olympiad training support, and  37 Federations planning to send 54 teams (37 open and 17  women) applied. Currently the program is only for the  pre-competition preparation and in an open and transparent process, 24 trainers applied of which only 22 trainers met our minimum criteria as follows:    https://trainers.fide.com/2022/04/26/list-of-trainer-applications-for-olympiad-support/ Now it is in the hands of the Federations who will make their choices on a first come first serve basis in the next 48 hours or so. Should the number of trainers be insufficient, or there is a language mismatch, then the FIDE Trainers' Commission will work directly with the Federations to identify suitable trainers and with priority being given to available trainers from the All Indian Chess Federation.

Thinking Vacation!

Image
Not going to the SEA Games so the middle of May is not overwhelmingly busy and it is coming down to basically three choices: Athens. Everything within walking distance, all that history and culture, shopping and food. With very pleasant one to two day excursions. Planned for in December but found out after making all the bookings that Malaysia was then not on the list of countries allowed into Greece. South Africa. Certainly would be the grand adventure. And in the company of good friends... Bali. The easy travel option and the quarantine measures still in place is not an inconvenience when staying at a resort. Still magical and with something for everyone.

The Work of TRG Today

Image
Below are the key points of my presentation at the KCFAP Chess Hub on the work of the FIDE Trainers' Commission: The FIDE Trainers' Commission 1.1     The FIDE Trainers’ Commission (hereinafter referred to as “TRG”) is responsible for regulating FIDE Trainer Titles and Licenses, organizing FIDE Trainer Seminars and TRG Professional Education & Development Workshops, administering the FIDE Endorsed Academies Program, and the FIDE Trainer Awards. 1.2     TRG work is both technical and administrative, and so is tasked with the development and implementation of all FIDE training programs and activities where TRG also reviews and gives its consent to continental and national trainers activities funded by the FIDE Development Fund. The FIDE Trainer System 2.1.    TRG evaluates trainers for the award and licensing of FIDE Trainer titles through FIDE Trainer Seminars, TRG Professional Education & Development Workshops, Direct Applications, and the passing of a recognized Spor

Your Enemies Are Not My Enemies

Image
NELSON MANDELA:  One of the mistakes which some political analysts make is to think their enemies should be our enemies.  (*standing ovation from audience*)  Our attitude towards any country is determined by the attitude of that country to our struggle. Yasser Arafat, Colonel Gaddafi [and] Fidel Castro support our struggle to the hilt. There is no reason whatsoever why we should have any hesitation about hailing their commitment to human rights as they’re being demanded in South Africa… They do not support [the anti-apartheid struggle] only in rhetoric; they are placing resources at our disposal for us to win the struggle. That is the position.

Some Recovery in Sunny Spain!

Image
Iceland was -40.4 and Spain is 13,8, so a nett rating loss of 26.6 so a drop to from 2317 to 2290, no disaster at all.

Playing to Rating

Image
Holding a 2600 GM while remaining unbeaten and now playing to his rating must be very encouraging. Unfortunately there is no possibility of an IM norm and the remaining two rounds will show how much he can recover lost the rating points lost from the earlier Reykjavik Open.

Top Down or Bottom Up?

Image
Singapore chess has always looked at investing in their young players and to develop young talent and while I probably know more than most, in many respects I am still guessing (not being quite old enough to have witnessed it all first hand) and arguably there has been several phases now, all interesting, with most representative of its time. PATRONAGE, SELF FINANCE The early years, of the likes of Tan Lian Ann, Lim Seng Hoo, even Leslie Leow, whose extraordinary achievements might never be matched, and it was largely patronage where by the time of Wong Meng Kong, their first ever grandmaster, was mainly through patronage and/or out of own pocket.  BOTTOM UP Ignatius Leong, first through his ASEAN Chess Academy which at its peak had over 40 trainers employed from literally every part of the world and was bringing thousands of children every year into the game, the concept of HPE (High Performance Excellence) was introduced, beginning with an elite group, a hoped to be golden generation

The Final Result in Reykjavik

It is probably going to be back to the drawing board...

Lim Zhou Ren in Reykjavik

Image
It has not been easy going for Zhou Ren at the Reykjavik Open, starting with three successive draws against 2000+ players which basically already ended all hope for an IM title norm. Back to back wins made it a lot better but that meant meeting his first master strength opponent but although that was too high a hill to climb, it was the subsequent loss to a 2000+ the very next round that was the real disaster. Now it is just a question of minimising rating loss in the last two games.

Summary of TRG Activities in Q1 2022 in Informative Report to the FIDE Council

Image
Every quarter a FIDE Commission can  submit an "informative report" to the FIDE Council at their meeting provided the contents are agreed by the FIDE Management Board through their assigned supervisor, and below is what we have submitted: FIDE CHESSABLE ACADEMY In 2021 successfully started FIDE Chessable Academy, where the program ran from July to December 2021 with a total of 250 participants, between 8-16 years of age, an equal number of boys and girls, representing 100 Federations.   The highlight being the camp of 12 selected participants organized during the World Chess Championship Match in Dubai.      Camp reports: https://fide.com/news/1454 https://fide.com/news/1459 https://fide.com/news/1463 In 2022, taking the lessons from 2021, we have created a bigger focus of offering young players who have limited or even no opportunities to learn from top trainers. We are also organizing in two separate semesters, from March to May and September to November to accommodate as b

Christopher Hitchen's Introduction to George Orwell's Animal Farm

Image
Animal Farm George Orwell, Christopher Hitchens (Introduction) Mr Jones, the owner of Manor Farm, is a lazy drunk. The animals decide to overthrow him in a revolution that will allow them to run the farm, liberating themselves and creating a new life of equality and freedom. But they have underestimated the pigs. Napoleon and Snowball form an elite and take control for themselves, and the tyranny of the farmer is replaced with another kind of control leaving the animals again subject to a ruthless and cruel authority. Imagined only as Orwell could, this powerful fable is instilled with humour and an underlying urgency that makes this one of the most prescient warnings ever written.
